View from the deck of the USS Monitor, on the James River in Virginia, July 1862.

The USS Monitor was the first ironclad warship commissioned by the US Navy during the American Civil War. The Monitor is most famous for fighting in the Battle of Hampton Roads in March 1862, the first-ever battle fought between two ironclads. The Monitor fought the ironclad CSS Virginia (the former frigate USS Merrimack) of the Confederate States Navy. The dents seen on the ship in the photo were inflicted during that battle.
